Market Research Specialist

Communications, Marketing and Community Relations

Introduction

We are seeking a full time Market Research Specialist who is passionate about understanding and solving practical business questions by combining data-driven analytics and customer insights.

We’re looking for someone who can successfully partner with cross-functional business stakeholders to identify and address critical business issues and utilize research, data, analytical methods, and modeling to translate quantitative and qualitative assessments into actionable insights.

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • Experience in executing data visualization and BI tools. (SMUD uses Microsoft Power BI)
  • Professional experience and can program SAS, R , Python or other programming languages.
  • Experience in machine learning models such as regression, neural network, etc.
  • Experience in relational databases such as SQL
  • Experience working with structured and unstructured data
  • Ability to demonstrate excellent communication and collaboration skills.
  • Experience presenting complex data/technical information in person or virtually to a non-data/technical audience
  • Strong analytic storytelling skills
  • Bachelors or Masters/above degree in a quantitative field such as data science, computer science, engineering, psychology, math, physics, economics, statistics, operation research or a related field.


This posting intends to fill one, regular full-time, Market Research Specialist position, AND create an eligibility list which may be used to fill future full-time or limited term Market Research Specialist vacancies over the next two (2) years.

Purpose

Assists in the design and conduct of primary and secondary market research studies and perform the collection of marketing and customer data that provide information to form the basis of the Districts strategic marketing policies; oversees assigned survey projects; builds and manages complex sample databases for the department.

Serves as a journey-level resource in a relevant professional discipline; works independently on projects of minor to moderate complexity; exercises independent judgment and discretion within established broad guidelines.

Major Duties & Responsibilities

Work may include, but is not limited to, the following: (NOTE: While in general all the functions and requirements listed are essential, individual positions and/or locations may not require all duties be performed.)

  • Gathers and analyzes data on a monthly basis to provide appropriate reports and recommendations to market research staff; builds and manages complex sample databases on an ongoing basis.
  • Analyzes, summarizes, and makes recommendations on marketing information through the coordination and integration of customer databases that contain information pertinent to customer purchasing behavior; ensures the integration of marketing databases with corporate data and data structure.
  • Coordinates with other organizational groups such as customer accounts and customer services to ensure data collection and methodology consistency.
  • Supports the design of new products/services features and offerings, and development of product-specific marketing strategies and materials, through identification of desirable product and service attributes, competitor offerings and appropriate target markets.
  • Evaluates market potential by estimating customers willingness to pay for services, demand and price modeling to determine optimal price, and estimating elasticity and effects.
  • Develops the process for collecting the samples for assigned survey projects.
  • Works with research vendor/contractor to ensure customer samples are appropriate and effective.
  • Develops and manages the process for negative customer feedback and ensures that any issues are resolved to the customers satisfaction.
  • Performs related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: High school diploma or equivalent supplemented by college level coursework in marketing, business administration, economics, statistics or a related field.

Experience: Three (3+) or more years of relevant experience in conducting market research projects, including project management.

Knowledge Of: Quantitative and qualitative methods of marketing and customer research; principles and applications of statistics; research and sample design, survey methods, data collection, analysis and reporting of results; economic and pricing principles; database administration and management; statistical analysis principles and methods; research methodologies; survey techniques; project management and control; operational and service characteristics; database computer applications; office procedures, methods, and equipment including computers and applicable software applications such as word processing, spreadsheets, and databases.

Skill To: Work effectively across all SMUD departments and gain the cooperation of all functional areas of SMUD in the development of customer information and information databases; plan and design research projects including sampling methods and development of survey instruments; apply appropriate statistical and analytic techniques; operate office equipment including computers and supporting word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications; prepare clear and concise analytical reports; communicate effectively orally and in writing internally/externally; establish and maintain effective working relationships internally/externally.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Bachelors or Masters/above degree in a quantitative field such as data science, computer science, engineering, psychology, math, physics, economics, statistics, operation research or a related field or equivalent experience (an additional four (4) years of relevant experience).
  • Experience in executing data visualization and BI tools. (SMUD uses Microsoft Power BI)
